Abstract

The American Association for Public Opinion Research is currently implementing its Transparency Initiative (TI), which is designed to encourage the open sharing of basic methodological information regarding the conduct of survey research among both members and non-members. The TI is intended to provide educational outreach to participating organizations, the users of survey data, and the general public to reinforce the importance and value of transparency. It is designed to encourage and facilitate the routine disclosure of methodological information regarding surveys and polls whose findings are released to the public. Through the initiative, AAPOR will certify and formally recognize those organizations that routinely disclose methodological information. Teams of AAPOR volunteers have been contributing their time since 2009 to organize and develop the mechanisms necessary to formally implement the TI. This presentation will provide an overview of those mechanisms and the current status of the Transparency Initiative.
