Abstract

Preparing for and managing the collection of surveys using multiple modes of collection and ensuring the resulting dataset is of appropriate quality is challenging for all survey organizations. This presentation will discuss the technical and methodological challenges and opportunities in mixed mode data collection. The proliferation of devices being used by respondents to access on-line web surveys and BYOD (bring your own device) in organizational contexts adds further complexity to testing and system integration. Specifically, we will discuss the various approaches used when 'mixing multiple methods (modes) to obtain self-reports, collect observations, or measure attributes, within the same survey effort. Both concurrent and sequential mixed mode designs will be elaborated and contrasted with accompanying discussion of cost and error source tradeoffs and profiles. We will also highlight system designs that facilitate mode switching and sequencing so that metadata and paradata documentation is complete and can inform end users of the survey data.
