Abstract
This brief paper reports on the utility of mixed methods research design within the framework of the Index for Inclusion. Fundamentals of the index for inclusion are introduced, including its dimensions, and action research and participatory processes. The use of mixed methods in the index for inclusion is discussed in the context of both examples from the index itself and the literature. Other topics related to methodology including the study scope, role of researchers in context, and data collection and ethical considerations related to different contexts are discussed. It is recommended that future research in inclusive education may incorporate mixed methods into action research designs where opportunities present themselves and it is appropriate to the school context.
