This presentation will discuss the use of social simulation to model the formation of marriage markets and examine emergent patterns in partnering. Simulation models can be used to examine the partnership formation process as a complex system, providing additional insight that cannot be gained from traditional statistical modelling. Of particular interest is the ability to mimic the choices of individuals at the micro level and then assess the impacts of this pattern of choice both on the wider society (macro level) and in shaping later micro level choices. The key focus of the talk will be to examine how the methodology and results of previously completed simulations of marriage markets using New Zealand census data can be used to inform simulation models of Australian marriage markets.
