in this paper we are using harmonized paradata, notably an interviewer questionnaire, to measure the role interviewers play when observing cross national differences in nonresponse.
The Survey of Health, Aeging and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) is conducted in 20 countries and from the start hast the asset of a harmonized paradata collection. In the field contact data is collected by the same sample management system over all countries.
In wave four a initiative has been stated to examine interviewer effects on data collection. The German and the French country team started a interviewer survey in their respective countries. A harmonized questionnaire measuring expectations, experiences and attitudes towards surveys was used in both countries. The comined SHARE paradata source and the results of the interviewer questionnaire now allow for detailed analysis of interviewer behavior in France and Germany. The interviewer effects can thus be compared to country and agency effects.
