Abstract
Within criminology there is a long tradition of ethnographic research. This paper explores this tradition with reference to two in-depth studies of female injecting drug use. The paper illustrates some of the practical, ethical and methodological issues connected with ethnographic research on injecting drug use and it points to the key role of 'knowledgeable insiders' at all stages of the research process (from design through to dissemination).
