Abstract
The Australian component of the World Values Survey (WVS), the Australian Values Study (AVS), was fielded in 2018 by the Social Research Centre on behalf of the Australian National University.
For most countries participating in Wave 7 of the WVS (2017-19), the main method of data collection is face-to-face interview at respondent’s place of residence. Respondents are sampled at the household level and data is collected using a paper questionnaire or using Computer Assisted Personal Interview (CAPI).
In Australia, achieving a representative sample via a face to face methodology would be exceedingly expensive due to the geographical dispersion of the population. For this reason, the AVS researchers requested special consideration for an amended methodology. The resultant AVS methodology was an innovative address-based sampling (ABS) frame and sequential push-to-web and paper mode design.
This presentation will provide an understanding of the selected sample frame, Geocoded National Address File (G-NAF), and outline our approach to drawing the sample. Where appropriate, we will make comparison to random digit dialling frames commonly used for sampling in Computer Assisted Telephone Interview (CATI) surveys in Australia. We will detail the methodological approach to the sequential web and paper mode design and the resultant contact rates for the study.
